A garden fence should therefore be made of boiler-impregnated natural hardwood. However, most domestic wood must first be made resistant to pests, fungi and weathering before being used in fence construction. The Nordic pine, for example, can be well impregnated with salts in the boiler pressure process, which significantly increases the durability of a pine wooden fence. Due to its high resin content, larch wood is by nature weatherproof and can also be used outdoors without chemical wood preservation.

When building a wooden fence made of cedar wood, however, the higher initial costs compared to standard garden timbers such as spruce are to be considered. For example, 2 cm thick square fence slats cost 15 to 30% more than the same fence slats made of impregnated spruce wood in square meters of larch wood. A fence slat in the dimensions 2 x 11.5 x 100 cm made of spruce wood costs about 3.90 dollars in trade and larch about 5.60 dollars. On the other hand, the costs for the annual impregnation of the wooden fence are saved by the use of larch wood.

Larch wood without impregnation

The European larch is the hardest native softwood and is one of the world’s twelve larch species. Originally she grew only in the high mountains; nowadays, however, it is successfully cultivated even at lower altitudes.

The Siberian larch differs only insignificantly from the European larch. It is native to Western Siberia and has a rather yellowish color in the core. Attachments for wood production are made in Finland and Sweden.

A wooden fence made of larch wood actually needs no protective impregnation. Larch wood has a reddish-brown in the core and in the sapwood a gold-beige color with clearly recognizable annual rings. The wood is heavier and harder, the narrower these rings are. Over time, the surfaces of the larch wood will still gray due to weather conditions such as rain and sunlight. To obtain the reddish-beige wood color and grain, painting with an open-pored colorless glaze may be useful. By using an open-pored wood glaze, the larch wood can continue to breathe. When using a non-porous paint such as paint would be a higher risk of wood rot. Partial cracks in the paint surface could allow moisture to penetrate the wood, but not escape again. The paint keeps the moisture trapped, which prevents it from drying and rot.Elaborate fence repairs can be prevented with a suitable coat of paint.
